Net Zero Energy Home,Northport, Long Island, NY

Project Details & Design Approach

The challenge was to create a “Net Zero Energy” home on a tight site where large houses loom close by and eliminate the opportunity for a passive solar design.

Features

  • Grid-tied solar photovoltaic panels provide all of the home’s electricity needs
  • Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) home, which can withstand the highest of winds, is fire proof, impervious to water and will last literally for centuries
  • Active solar thermal system
  • Evacuated tube panels on the roof
  • Insulated water tanks acting as thermal storage system providing hot water and winter heating
  • Thermal mass of concrete walls and floors modulates outside temperature swings
  • High insulation value
  • Close to zero air infiltration
  • Two energy recovery ventalators
  • In-floor radiant heating system
  • Ocean-Safe roof structural panel system
  • Standing-seam 100-year metal roof
  • Cement fiber siding
  • Classic good looks

Challenges

  • Small site
  • Limited opportunity for passive solar heating because of nearby homes

Objectives

  • Longevity
  • Durability
  • Adaptability
  • Net Zero Energy
  • Constructablity
  • Maintain Budget Restraints
  • Aesthetically Pleasing
